Reminds me of how here in India, there's a saying,

When a woman is small her father takes care of her, when she grows up her husband takes care of her and when she's old her son takes care of her.

I always found this saying so annoying, basically saying women aren't capable of handling themselves, that we always need a man. That we get "transferred" from one man's care to another.
